Fredi Gonzalez continues to shake up lineup

For years, Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox often stuck with the same lineup, night after night, whether successful or a dismal failure.

One of the biggest differences between Cox and new manager Fredi Gonzalez is the new skipper's willingness to change his lineup frequently, something he has done so much this year that some have accused him of simply pulling the players' names out of a hat to determine their order.

Loss of Joe Mather doesn't hurt the Braves

The Atlanta Braves have lost outfielder Joe Mather to free agency after he opted to test the market instead of being sent back to Triple-A by the team for a second time this year. Mather will try to catch on with another team, but with a sudden glut of outfielders in Atlanta the Braves did not need the tall, versatile bench player anymore.

Mather had the right to claim free agent status since the Braves had already optioned him to the minors once this year. The 28-year old backup outfielder was sent down a second time since centerfielder Nate McLouth has come off the disabled list and Atlanta has decided to keep rookie backup outfielder Wilkin Ramirez with the team.

Mike Minor establishing himself

Atlanta Braves fans have to be happy with the performance of Mike Minor, who finally got another major league win in a 5-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday, June 21. The former No. 1 draft pick had gone 10 starts and almost 10 months without picking up a victory.

Braves looking for offense against the Mets

The Atlanta Braves' offense has gone completely MIA and even the return of right fielder Jason Heyward couldn't jump-start their bats in a soggy, rain-delayed second straight loss to the New York Mets on June 15. Atlanta has now turned the matter entirely over to its pitchers, and while they aren't pitching that badly, you can't win a game unless you can score a run.

Injuries on offense hurting Braves

You know the Atlanta Braves are having injury serious issues when Diory Hernandez is logging time at first base.

Hernandez had to come in at the end of the Braves' 4-3 loss Tuesday night to the New York Mets and play first, something he has never done before. That was because the Braves took regular first baseman Freddie Freeman out of the lineup just 40 minutes before the start of Tuesday's series opener against New York due to what was termed a "mild right oblique strain."

Braves need Heyward's bat to jolt offense

The Atlanta Braves got good news Monday night that injured right fielder Jason Heyward started a rehab assignment with AAA-club Gwinnett and promptly doubled in the first inning. The Braves really need his bat to add a jolt to their offense.
